Have you noticed recently how hula hoop fitness classes are cropping up all over the place? Classes are gaining popularity for their fun element, effective exercise benefits and community spirit. Have you been thinking about trying a hula hoop class for yourself but something is holding you back?
I know what that something is.. FEAR.
Fear of failure, fear of embarrassment, not trusting your ability and fearing that you will be the only one who can't do it!
Fear can be a debilitating emotion but it doesn't have to hold you back any longer.
So in the famous words of Susan Jeffers "Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway!"
Or in other words "Feel The Fear And Just Go To The Damn Hula Hoop Class!"
Here are some common fears that hold people back from achieving their fitness goals!
Fear #1 - You Can't Hula Hoop.
Well why do you think it's called a Hula Hoop CLASS. You are there to learn! No one expects you to be perfect first time or even second, third or fourth time. You have a teacher and her job is to teach you how to hula hoop. It's not as hard as you think, anyone can do it you just need the right size of hoop for your body, the right technique and a determination to not give up! This also applies for anything in life, if you think you can't do something then learn! Don't let lack of knowledge hold you back. Google is your best friend!
Fear #2 - You're Too Overweight.
People often say to me 'Oh I could never do that, the hula hoop wouldn't even fit around my waist!' Well all I have to say to that is... RUBBISH! My class consists of women of all shapes and sizes, some may struggle at first if the hula hoop is too small but as soon as they try my 'magic' hula hoop (basically an extra extra large hoop that works for anyone) they soon change their mind! You are there to lose weight and take control of your health, just by attending class you are taking the first steps so be proud of yourself!
Fear #3 - People Are Judging You.
A lot of insecurities and shyness comes from the fear of being judged, so many of us don't achieve the things we want in life because we're too concerned with what other people think about us. Whether it's attending a hula hoop class or chasing your dreams. The reality is people don't always think the worst of us and even if they do then they're not worth even wasting our energy on.
The minute you stop worrying about what people think so much you free your mind. You can start achieving the things that you never thought possible. You become the person that the former you would look at with longing and envy.
So my point is this -
If you want to try hoop class but your putting it off, sit and think about why that might be. I can guarantee it's a fear of something maybe it's one of the things I have listed or maybe it's something else. Either way don't let it hold you back! You can do this exercise with any aspect of your life.
Ask yourself why am I procrastinating? (Most likely it will be connected to some kind of fear)
What is the worst that could happen and how would I deal with it if it did happen? (Just know that you are capable, you can handle anything that life throws your way)
What am I afraid of and why? (Your fear is most probably irrational and once you think it through you may realize you're no longer afraid)
