Sprint Training For Rugby Fitness

Introduction

Obviously rugby is an incredibly demanding game both mentally and physically. A number of physical attributes are required, no matter what position you play, such as strength, power and speed. Today this article will focus on speed, why it is important in rugby, how you can improve it and why this is great for your training goals!

Why is speed important?

Across all sports, a quick athlete is a good athlete. Speed is one of the most important attributes that an athlete can build as it will make the difference between making a tackle and not making a tackle, scoring a try or not scoring a try, these are the things that really matter. Remember: a forward that is both quick and powerful will be able to break through tackles and move to breakdowns quickly. A back that shows a great deal of speed will be able to avoid tackles and sprint for the try line, or sprint in defense to help make those try saving tackles!

Improving my speed

There are a number of training tools you can use to improve your sprinting speed. Firstly, strength and resistance training in the lower body will help to develop leg strength and power, an important component in overall total body speed. Every rugby player should be performing movements such as squats and leg presses as well as power exercises such as cleans. This should then be combined with some form of sprint training.

Typically short bursts over short durations with a relatively short rest period. For example a useful drill when on the rugby pitch is sprinting from the try line to the 22, walk to the half way line, sprint to the next 22, then walk to the try line.

Other ways to improve your speed include overloading just your bodyweight and using tools to increase your drag such as parachute running and using bungee rope, however this is reserved for the advanced athlete and those that are able to get their hands on this type of equipment.

The benefits of sprinting

Regardless of your goals sprint training is great for your health and fitness, helps increase your fat burning capability and is also a good way to increase your muscle gain. So many benefits in just one discipline!

Sprint training can be taken up by anyone, and with almost no special kit required at all, all you need is a park or a rugby pitch, some decent rugby boots or trainers and you are away!
